Disable CD autorun/auto-insert notification on Windows 2000 (Win2k)

I don't like the autorun feature of Windows at all. I don't see how inserting media in a drive should be interpreted as a command - I think someone at Microsoft just had a brain explosion when they thought this would be a good idea. There are one or two instances where having the auto-insert notification is nice, but generally the hassel of not having the nice ones far out ways the hassel of having the rest of them. I can't handle when my computer slows me down for 2 seconds; 5 seconds is out of the question.

At any rate you can disable it on Win2k by:

  1. Run regedit.exe
  2. Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
  3. Edit or Create the DWORD value 'Autorun'
  4. Set the value of 'Autorun' to 0

btw: I found out how to do this from www.annoyances.org. I only just discovered this site this morning via a google search, seems like it might be worth checking out for other settings like this.
